Whitelisting Your Practice's Phone Number: Spam Prevention

Whitelisting Your Practice's Phone Number: Spam Prevention

Recently, major service providers such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, among others, have been taking more measures to block calls that exhibit characteristics commonly associated with robocall campaigns, such as a high volume of calls with short durations originating from a single number. This often results in a significant increase in the delivery of SIP 486 (Busy Here) response codes.

There are numerous legitimate scenarios where a large number of brief calls are necessary, such as notifying people about practice closures, or sending patient reminders. These situations are entirely valid and people have willingly agreed to receive such calls. However, when analyzed collectively at the network level, these calls can resemble illegal robocalling.

In order to ensure your outbound calls aren't miscategorized as unwanted or fraudulent calls by the wireless carriers, we highly encourage you to proactively request whitelisting of legitimate outbound calling use cases from each of the major wireless carriers.

If recipients of your calls report that your number(s) appear as "Scam Likely" or "Spam" on their phones, you can use the provided resources below to help correct these mislabeled caller identifications. The following list includes several data aggregators that supply filtered lists of spam numbers to various service providers. You can get in touch with them and explain that your number(s) are being inaccurately flagged as spam. Additionally, it's possible to identify the service provider of the recipient's number and inform them about the issue.
