Setting up tracking numbers is crucial for understanding and optimizing your lead sources. By assigning unique phone numbers to different marketing channels, you can accurately identify which campaigns or sources drive the most calls and new patients.
This guide walks you through purchasing, setting up, and testing tracking numbers so you can complete the entire setup independently.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have:
Step 1 — Identify Your Sources
Decide which marketing channels you want to track. Each source should have its own unique tracking number to ensure accurate reporting.
Common examples:
- Google Ads (CPC)
- Organic Search (SEO)
- Facebook / Instagram Ads
- Referral Traffic (e.g., Yelp, insurance sites)
- Direct Visitors (typed-in URL)
Step 2 — Purchase or Port a Tracking Number
Before setting up call tracking, you’ll need to either:
You can do both directly from the Adit app. Once the number is purchased or ported in successfully, proceed to the setup.
Step 3 — Set Up Your Tracking Number
- Go to Settings in the Adit App.

- Select Number List from the menu.

- Under the Tracking Numbers section, locate your number and click the pencil icon (✏️) to edit.

Now configure the following details:
4. Tracking Number Name
Give your tracking number a clear, descriptive name (e.g., “Google Ads,” “Facebook Ads,” “Organic”).

5. Route To
Choose where incoming calls should be routed:

- Landline number
- External number
- Call Flow (custom routing logic)
6. Dynamic Number Placement (DNP)
This section determines where this tracking number will appear on your website, based on how the visitor arrived.

Available Options:
If you’ve purchased a tracking number to track a specific source or campaign, you can choose any of the options below instead:
- Web Referrals: Visitors referred from another website (e.g., Yelp, BBB, insurance listings).
- Landing Page: Visitors landing on a specific page.
- Direct: Visitors who type your website URL directly.
- Offline: For non-digital sources (e.g., flyers, mailers).
- Google Ad Extension / Mobile Extension: Track calls directly from Google Ads campaigns.
- Always Swap: Always replace your website number with this tracking number.
7. Record Calls
For calls routed to an external number or landline number, you can choose to record inbound calls or set a greeting.

Don’t forget to click Save when finished.
Step 4 — Set Up Dynamic Number Placement (Call Swapping)
What Is Dynamic Number Placement?
Dynamic Number Placement (DNP), also called Call Swapping, automatically changes the phone number displayed on your website based on a visitor’s traffic source.
Example:
- A visitor from Google Ads → sees the “Google Ads” number
- A visitor from Facebook Ads → sees the “Facebook” number
- A visitor from Organic Search → sees the “Organic” number
This allows accurate tracking of which marketing channels generate the most calls, visible in Adit App Reports.
How It Works
Adit’s DNP uses a small JavaScript snippet on your website. It automatically shows different phone numbers based on how visitors arrived, helping you understand which channels generate the most valuable leads.
Setup Instructions
- In the Adit App, go to Settings → Dynamic Number Placement.
- Select the Location you want to configure.
- Copy the JavaScript snippet provided by Adit after the location is selected.
- Paste it into your website’s
<head> section or deploy it via Google Tag Manager (GTM).
Tip: If using GTM, set the trigger to All Pages for consistent tracking across your entire site.
Step 5 — Test Call Swapping
How to Test
- Open an Incognito / Private Browser window.
Visit your website through different sources:
- Google Search (Organic)
- Google Ads (add
/?gclid=test to your site URL)
Example: www.abcdentist.com/?gclid=test
- Observe the phone number. It should change depending on the source.
Place a test call, then check in Adit → Call Tracking → Call Logs and confirm that:
- The call is recorded
- The correct source is attributed
Troubleshooting: If Call Swapping Isn’t Working
- Clear your browser cache or test in Incognito Mode.
- Verify that the DNP script is installed on all pages (just before the closing
</head> tag). - Confirm that each source in Adit has the correct tracking number assigned.
You’re All Set!
Once your tracking numbers and Dynamic Number Placement are configured, Adit will automatically record and attribute all incoming calls, giving you complete visibility into which marketing channels drive results.
