Patients contacting practices using Adit sometimes report that messages (SMS/iMessage) or calls are sent to or received from the wrong contact on an iPhone. This typically occurs when one contact card contains multiple phone numbers (e.g., Work and Mobile) or when iOS automatically merges contacts.
This KB explains:
Why iPhones mix work and personal numbers
Common root causes confirmed by Apple Community discussions
Practical ways patients can clearly differentiate contacts
Recommended best practices to avoid future confusion
This behavior is iOS-related and not caused by Adit.
Messages sent to a practice appear under a personal contact
Replies arrive from an unexpected contact thread
iMessages go to a different number than intended
Calls/texts show the correct name but wrong phone number
Same contact appears with mixed message history
Apple iOS is designed to streamline conversations, which can unintentionally merge numbers.
If a single contact includes:
Mobile (personal)
Work (office)
iOS may choose a different number than expected when sending messages.
Apple Community reference:
Texting to contact with multiple numbers
iOS may automatically combine contacts based on:
Same name
Same Apple ID email
iCloud contact syncing
This is especially common after iOS updates (e.g., iOS 12 and later).
Apple Community reference:
ios 12 imessage streamlining - Apple Community
Same contact with different numbers in the same message thread
iOS often prioritizes:
iMessage-enabled numbers
Recently used numbers
Numbers associated with Apple ID
As a result, messages may go to the wrong number even when the correct contact name is selected.
Apple Community reference:
Apple users claim iOS 12 is sending iMessages to the wrong contacts
If contacts are synced from:
Multiple email accounts (Gmail, Exchange, iCloud)
Shared Apple IDs (family or work devices)
Duplicate or merged contact data can occur.
Apple Community reference:
Work and mobile numbers are separate
This is the most reliable solution.
Example:
ABC Dental – Office
John Smith – Personal
Steps:
Open Contacts on the iPhone
Locate the merged contact
Tap Edit
Remove one of the phone numbers
Tap Save
Create a new contact and add the removed number
Apple Community users report success by explicitly setting which number iOS should use for iMessage when a contact has multiple numbers.
Steps (as per Apple Community guidance):
Open Contacts
Select the affected contact
Tap Edit
Tap Messages (or iMessage if shown)
Choose the correct phone number to be used for messaging
Save the contact
This forces iOS to stop auto-selecting a different number for iMessage conversations.
Apple Community reference:
Texts from multiple numbers under same contact merged
If keeping one contact card:
Open Contacts
Tap Edit
Ensure numbers are labeled correctly (e.g., Mobile, Work, Office)
Avoid using multiple Mobile labels
⚠️ Note: Even with proper labels, iOS may still override the selection based on recent usage or iMessage availability.
Open Contacts
Tap Lists (top-left)
Review contact sources (iCloud, Gmail, Exchange)
Disable unnecessary contact accounts if applicable
(Screenshot placeholder: Contacts → Lists → Accounts)
Open Messages
Tap New Message
Enter the phone number directly instead of selecting a saved contact
This avoids iOS automatically choosing a different number.
Adit does not control patient iPhone contact behavior
Message routing issues are caused by iOS contact management
Adit phone numbers remain unchanged and functional
Advise patients to contact Apple Support if:
The issue persists after separating contacts
Messages continue merging incorrectly
Contact edits do not save or sync properly
To validate the reported behavior, Adit performed controlled testing on iOS using a single contact with multiple phone numbers (Home and Work). The goal was to observe how iOS handles iMessage routing and conversation threading.
One contact card containing Home and Work numbers
Messages sent alternately to Home and Work
Replies sent back from the Home number
No changes made to Adit routing or phone numbers during testing
What this shows:
Message “Test 1 sent to home” is delivered correctly
Reply “Test 1 reply from home” is received as expected
Confirms baseline functionality when iOS selects the intended number
What this shows:
Messages “Test 1 sent to work” and “Test 2 sent to work” appear under the same contact
iOS continues using the same conversation thread despite switching numbers
Indicates automatic conversation merging by iOS
What this shows:
Messages sent to Home and Work appear in a single thread
Replies are received inconsistently
Final message “Test 3 – no replies received” demonstrates the issue clearly
Confirms iOS prioritization can prevent replies from reaching the expected number
These screenshots confirm:
iOS merges conversations when a contact contains multiple phone numbers
iMessage prioritization can override the selected number
Message delivery and replies may appear inconsistent
This behavior aligns with Apple Community–documented iOS behavior and is not caused by Adit.
